Exciting News!!!

I received an email a few weeks back from the people over at Purflo and Koo-di, it was very interesting and very exciting. I had originally contacted both prior to the raffle to see if they would be willing to donate anything to help us raise money for Headstart....of course they did and it now has a lovely home!

I didn't want to mention too much until I had chance to speak to the lovely Natasha, which I did last week. So I can now confirm that My little head has been selected to be a brand Ambassador for both Purflo and Koo-di.....

Exciting stuff - Anyone in the 'baby know' should know just how exciting this is!!! These brands offer parents gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous high quality products for parents and parents to be....Did I mention that I was excited......

For those who may not quite be up to speed Purflo developed the goodnight sleeptight sleep system to promote safe sleeping for babies - they even have a specially adapted mattress that helps prevent Flat Head Syndrome and reduce the risk of SIDS. They have a number of other products also each designed to give baby the safest sleeping environment possible.

Koo-di have developed an array of products designed to make parents lives easier!! Fun, vibrant and funky products that  not only make our lives easier but bring sunshine and laughter into our children's lives a perfect combination. Koo-di have recently released an award winning bath range designed to make bath times safer and more enjoyable for both babies and parents - its also rather funky to look at too!!

To check out Purflo and Koo-di's full range check out there websites: purflo and koo-di

and what does this mean for us?? Well as we speak we have some wonderful items in the post for us to review - keep your eyes peeled!!

Helmet Graduation!!

I guess the important post - so it gets First dibs! Finny has graduated from His Helmet! Hip Hip Hip Hip Hooray!!

I should have posted this a long time ago - Little finny actually finished treatment a few weeks early as his head outgrew the helmet, but his official graduation day was Friday 01st November (I know it was such a long time ago, I'm sorry). We thought because of the earlier finish and due to the fact his progress had been slowing in previous appointments, we would only see 1mm if that during his last few weeks in treatment but fantastically on his final measurement he had another reduction of 2mm.

Finny Started His Treatment with an Asymmetry or 18mm and on Graduation his asymmetry measured only 7mm. He was only in Treatment for 101 days and he had a massive 11mm reduction. He is only just out of the normal range now and to look at him you would hardly notice - Thank you so much Steve and Corrin from technology in Motion and to Headstart4babies for the initial funding!! This would not have been possible without you all :)

Finnys Final position on the Severity Graph :) - what a fabulous improvement!

At the clinic - Finny had his final measurements taken - this was done is the usual way. He then had to be rescanned, just like he did on the first appointment, with the little sock on his head. Unfortunately there was a problem and we couldn't take the scans home that day - but we got them two weeks later on a little memory stick, with a little programme installed with lets you view a 3D before and after image of Fins head, plus a little diagram of before and after so you can see where the growth has been! This is what I want to share with you:
Above is the diagram showing where fins growth has occurred, the grey line indicates his first scan at 5.5 months, the blue line is the graduation scan. The program allows you look at every angle and every direction. I have tried to capture this shot from around his forehead rather than higher up or further down, but be aware this is just one snapshot and there are many many more depending where your looking from. I thought this one shows really well how his head has rounded out at the rear and to the right, this is where we wanted growth and you can see that this has greatly been achieved. You can also see (better at a slightly lower viewing angle) where he had a slight blossom on his forehead, this has now evened out too!!

Above are the 3D Scans looking directly down, the grey again is the first scan at 5.5 months. The blue is the graduation scan and I think this shows beautifully the success fin has had with this treatment!! Yay!!

Were back!!

I took a little break - that turned into a long holiday!! Time just got away from me. Returning to work was looming so I wanted to spend some time with Fin, then work began and then its now!! Anyway I am back on it. I have such exciting updates - it may take me a few days to get through them but I am starting now. I just need to work out what to update first!!!

Keep watching....!!!!

The Buggython Picture!

Better late than never!! Actually the Eastbourne Herald have been really supportive following little Finny and his journey and they have kindly dug out the Buggython Picture way back from August as Chris and I didnt take any pictures!! Doh!!
It seems like such a long time ago and little finny and his friends look so small - they are all huge now and it was only a few weeks ago. So much has happend since then and we have have raised so much money. I belive (without checking) our Grand total now stands at about £2553.61 or something like that, this includes all donations and gift Aid.......and the good news is we still havent finished!

Today Chris is raffling off the Theatre Tickets that Eastbourne Theatres donated for our Raffle at his work until friday - Unfortunatley they wernt drawn at the last event and the show is on 20th October so before our next Raffle - hopefully the Chris Friends at work will dig deep!!!!

4th Check-up

Last Friday Finny had his fourth Check up in Sevenoaks. Chris had a days holiday, so he got to come to which was really nice as he hasnt made it up since we had our initial appointment.
We had a slightly earlier appointment than usual as Corrin was on leave and Steve lives up in Leeds so he likes to get away as early as he can to beat the traffic!!
So we drove up for 11.20am. It worked out really well actually. We left as Fin settle for his nap in the car and he woke up when he normally does and had a little play untill about 10  minutes before we arrived when he decided he had had enough and he got himself a bit worked up!
As we arrived a lady was waiting with her little girl who was due to have her treatment finished at that appointment and she came out with a big smile on her face with helmet in hand - the little girl looked beautiful and her head was delicious and round!
We then when into the consulting room and Steve greeted us - he is obviously a pro as he measure Fin in next to no time. Fin usually gives Corrin a hard time moving his head here there an everywhere, but he sat staring at steve wide eyed and open mouthed......perhaps he thought steve looked funny lol. Anyway he popped all the measurements into the computer. He said Fin was responding great to the helmet, his back measurement remained at 84% as it always has, but he had a reduction in his asymettry again this time another 2mm - which now brings his whole total to 9mm.
Steve advised us that next appointment will be Fins last and the treatment finished!! He said although it still fits him, he is out growing it. He feels it should last, but theres a chance we may have to finish it sooner if Fin starts showing signs its a bit too snug like tugging at it. I hope it last - but even if it doesnt his head is so different than when we started it doesnt matter. To be honest as well I dont know how much, if anymore reduction we can expect. The greatest reduction is always in the first few weeks and it kind of teeters of so maybe we will get another 1 mm if were lucky, 2 if were really lucky and if not - it doesnt matter anyway.
So 25 days and counting!!!

I'm a winner too!!

Well with all these glorious prizes tucked away in my house is it a little wonder that I have been a tiny incy wincy bit jealous of all these lucky people winning them?!?! Especially my friends too, come on can you blame me?
Everyone keeps telling me to play and it's fine - why should it be a problem if I'm putting the money in too. However I just feel like it wouldn't be right, I don't want anyone to think Ive fixed it if I won something. So I took a back seat and congratulated everyone who has won so far - Then low and behold....(for those that dont know me I'm a bit of a comping addict whenever I have a spare moment I like to enter as much as I can...It pays of and I have won some nice prizes) ...just to make me feel even happier I got a phone call and Email from AngelCare UK who told me I had won a nappy bin and and a 2 year supply of refills!!!!
What makes this even more sweeter is that my Nappy bin had just run out of its last cassette and being at the end of maternity leave I was putting of buying more......now I'm hoping I will never have to buy any again, or at least until maybe another little baba arrives.....so now we have the job or getting Fin out of Nappies by the time hes 2yrs and 8 months!!

The Raffle a huge Success!!

Photo Courtesy of the Eastbourne Herald: www.eastbourneherald.co.uk L-R: Brett Boniface, Mandy Lloyd-Jones Holding Lilia Boniface, Me, Chris, Finny and Nanny Tuppen

So the Raffle was on Saturday - Oh my gosh that took some organising in the final few hours. I had prizes and baby clothes coming out of my ears. I was in such a faffle trying to organise it all - i didn't realise how impossible it was going to be with an almost 8 month old....actually a snotty almost 8 month old that insisted on trying to touch and cover all the clean clothes in snot and drool!!

I have to say a huge Thank you to my two good Friends Mandy (above left with Lilia) and Ruth for coming to rescue by coming round Friday and helping me sort through everything. Also Little Nanny took Finny for the afternoon. Even after Mandy and Ruth had long gone home, Chris, my mum and myself were up until 1am getting the final touches together - this included double folding over 800 tickets!!

The raffle couldn't have gone better - We ended up going with the old Tombola style as this was easier for us to keep in line with the rules and regulations set out by the lottery and Gambling big wigs and also easier for us as we had so many wonderful prizes. I just wish we had more time as by the end of the sale we still had lots of prizes left over so I am busy working on my next event!!

In total the Raffle and Sale raised a grand total of £353.61 - not bad for 2 hours work, this is all going into the pot for Headstart4babies!

To my surprise the Herald Photographer turned up again to take some pictures and to run an article in the Eastbourne Gazette which can also be found online here: http://www.eastbourneherald.co.uk/news/local/raffle-and-clothes-sale-s-welcome-boost-to-charity-1-5545065 , so a big thankyou to the Herald once again for keeping the issue highlighted and following our progress!

Secondly, a huge Thank you to Karen and Sarah who run the BumbleBee Nearly new sales for letting us have the charity Stall.

Thirdly, a huge Thank you to all our sponsors for your generous donations which without these no raffle would have taken place - So a massive massive thank you!

Below is a list of Winners from Saturday. If any of our sponsors read this and wonder where your donation is - its in the spare room waiting for the next event!

Resident of the Month!

I feel the like the last few weeks have merged into one big long week that has rushed by in a blink of an eye!! I have been so busy arranging stuff for our Raffle and just general life, that I cant believe its October today!!

Anyway to cut things short - I opened an email a few weeks back from a lovely lady named Jenny who advised me that Chris and I had been nominated for Eastbournes Resident of the Month for August - How Exciting - I don't think I have ever been nominated for anything in my life, so I didn't think there was going to be any chance of winning. I carried on reading and it sounded like it had been decided. I contacted Jenny who confirmed that all we needed to do was pop into Advanta (the sponsors) to get our picture taken for the Herald (Again) and we would be presented with a certificate, yes we had won!

I feel so Honoured - I never set out doing any of this for recognition. I just wanted other mums and dads to be able to have information about plagiocephaly to help them monitor and make decisions regarding their own little ones treatment options. I also wanted to ensure that we put as much money back into the charity as possible to help people who may not be as fortunate as us at raising funds. The Charity is a lifeline for families on lower incomes,  and no family should have to go without when it comes to treatment for young babies.

Last Thursday I met Chris during his lunch break and we took Little Finny into Advanta and we met Jenny and Yiotis who presented us with our certificate above!! We have also been given a meal for two at a local restaurant called Ridgeways up in Meads. I cant wait its been ages since Chris and I last went out....in fact Chris fell asleep last time in the cinema!! Haha!!

Jenny also advised us that, all winners throughout the year are put forward for Resident of the year....now that would be awesome - however I'm sure the competition are all amazing, so we will just dream for now!

Osteopathic Centre for Children - Free Osteopathy for babies and Children!

The Osteopathic Centre for Children is a charitable oesteopath centre based in Wandsworth, London. They aim to provide families the option of osteopath treatment regardless of your ability to pay. The clinic ask for a donation but this is not essential to you getting treatment for your child if you cant afford it.

Cranial Osteopathy is a great treatment for reducing plagiocephaly and on many occasions will reduce the condition enough to not require any further or other treatments. This is obviously dependant on the severity to begin with, but Treatment can be quite expensive. take a look at there website for more details: http://occ.uk.com/

The OCC is a charity and is only able to run due to the kind donations it receives, if you wish to donate please go to the website to find out how.

How to master tummy time if your baby suffers from plagiocephaly - Guest Post from Dr Kerstin Castle, Cosyplay

Dr Kerstin Castle has kindly written a guest post for us about how to master tummy time for babies suffering from Plagiocephaly:

If your baby suffers from plagiocephaly you may feel that you have a race against time on your hands.  During the first few months, your baby’s head is soft and grows at a phenomenal rate. Sleeping on the same spot every night means he might develop plagiocephaly or if he was born with it, it might become worse.  After five months, this growth rate slows significantly and the bones in the head harden.  You have been told, that tummy time is the solution, but you worry, because your baby shows no signs of being happy on his tummy and the window of time is closing.

Most health visitors and GPs will recommend tummy time, which has led many parents to attempt putting their young babies on their tummy with the result that the baby screams at which point many parents stop tummy time until the baby is “ready”.  If your baby’s head is perfectly shaped waiting for your baby to be ready is fine.  But what can you do if time is running out, and your baby is still not interested in tummy time?
Firstly, tummy time does not need to start on the tummy.  Put your baby on a soft surface, where you can both be comfortable and just play.  Roll your baby gently onto his side and see if he is happy in that position.  If not roll him back again.  See, you have just managed 15 seconds of time not spent on the flat spot.
The most important part in making tummy time enjoyable for your baby is your presence.  You need to be physically close to your baby if you want to introduce your baby to tummy time.  Your baby needs to hear your reassuring voice, see your smiling face and feel your touch to know that whatever is occurring is intentional.

It is best not to wait until your baby starts crying on his tummy.  Make a game out of rolling about by pulling funny faces when he is on his tummy and turn him back as soon as his delight at your face wanes.  Over time, you will find that your baby becomes much more used to being on his tummy and he will enjoy the new perspective.
Find a surface that is comfortable for both of you.  When you start tummy time, you need to be prepared to spend a lot of time there, so you might as well be comfortable.
It is true, that all babies develop at their own pace, but babies, which are encouraged to use their muscles, develop them quicker.  Any encouragement will lead to faster progress.  For example, if you lie on your back on the floor and “fly the baby” above you, you will feel your baby arching his back, trying to hold up his head.  It is not tummy time in the strictest sense, but it will help to get your baby to enjoy tummy time more quickly.

You should also consider that carrying your baby in your arms contributes to strengthening his muscles, because your baby will have to readjust his position and will try to balance whilst you move.  This will help with tummy time, because he will feel stronger, more coordinated and in control when placed on his tummy.
Finally remember to relax.  Babies are amazingly sensitive to their parents’ moods and emotions.  You may be anxious to get your baby to master tummy time quickly, but without you realising it, you transfer your state of mind to your baby.   Make time every day to play on the floor with your baby and gradually integrate rolling about into your daily routine.  A comfortable surface for both you and your baby will be helpful, and allow both of you to be relaxed.  A familiar duvet, blanket or play mat, which is associated with fun and play will be the best place to introduce new concepts such as tummy time.

This guest post was written by Dr Kerstin Castle, inventor of the cosyplay baby play mat.  Cosyplay baby play mats are made from memory foam and big enough for you and your baby, so you can be comfortable and relaxed whilst being part of your baby’s development.  See www.cosyplay.co.uk for more information.

Third Check up!

So on Friday - Finny had his third appointment with TiM. That means he has had his helmet for 6 weeks already - the time is flying - wont be long before its off completely!
Well we have been so pleased with the results so far, Finnys Head is looking gorgeous - he has developed a beautifully round bonce - so naturally we were very excited leading up to Friday to find out what his new measurements were, the only down side was Chris wasn't able to get the day of work - So Nanny came with us again!!
So Finnys new Measure were CI: 84% (still, but this is only very very mild so not an issue) and Asymmetry: 11mm - That means he has reduced 7mm in Six weeks!! The helmet is working great and you can see on his chart below he is heading very nicely for the Mild category - lets keep our fingers crossed this progress continues :)

Another section in the Eatbourne Herald!

The Eastbourne Herald have wrote another article for us about our fundraising efforts. Its a really brilliant article thats reads beautifully please take a few minutes to have a read!

Where has the time gone?!

I have realised its been ages since I have posted about Finnys Progress. I have been so busy organising the charity raffle I have had little time for anything else, especially as I have had to wait in to receive the mountain of wonderful donations to raffle off!!
On top of this I also have done a few of my KIT days at work, which surprisingly I enjoyed and it meant Finny got to spend some quality time with His Aunt, Cousin and Nanny.

So where to begin with Fin.......He is crawling... well he pulls himself along with his arms, but has been doing so since the 3rd August. We really wasn't expecting him to be on the move so quickly, he wasn't quite 6 months when he started!! He constantly gets on to all fours and rocks backwards and forwards, but so far he hasn't had the confidence and co - ordination to scoot of like that...not that it matters cos boy can he pick up some speed dragging!! My mum brought him a little ball the other day - he loves nothing more than to chase it around the lounge.

He is progressing really well with his Solids, in fact he eats anything (apart from Ellas fish pie which I found out in a cafe the other day haha). He is also doing really well with his finger foods - I'm hoping this continues and he wont be a fussy eater like I was.

Out of the blue a tooth arrived!! This also surprised me as I was convinced he would take after me in that department as I didn't have any teeth until I was well over a year old......but no one has popped through!

In the development department, I was beginning to worry as Fin was struggling to sit. I know babies develop at different rates but Fin has always had this lean and when ever he sat, he would always fall to that side. I was worried the tightness from birth was still affecting him and off-balencing him. The last few days though he has come on leaps and bounds, although he still has the odd wobble, hes almost there. I think half of it may be a 'who wants to sit when you can move' on Finnys part!!

We also took him to the park the other day and he had his first little sit in a baby swing. He really loved it, I'm hoping now hes sitting better he will enjoy it even more the next time we go!

On to Finnys Head - he is due an appointment of Friday, I cant wait, just looking at him there has been such an improvement. I have said if the regression stopped today I would be happy, Hes not perfect, and I have always said it wasn't about perfection. At this stage Fins Plagiocephaly is no longer noticeably abnormal. You cant really notice the flatness as it is rounding out nicely, he still has a slight blossom, but the other side no longer leads up to the blossom at a flat angle, can you notice it? not as much. His facial asymmetry is no longer noticeable and his ears are more in line - Which means he shouldn't have problems fitting hats, helmets and glasses if he needs them when his older. Were thrilled at this stage with his treatment and we still have another 10 weeks or so to go. I will keep you updated when we know more after his check up on Friday :)

Finnys 1st Check up

On Friday Finny had his first check up since having his Helmet. He has had an improvement of 4mm in 2 weeks!! So he is now down from an asymettry of 18mm to 14mm. So he is now borderline Sever/moderate on the chart - I forgot to take my little booklet up, I will contact Corrin to see if I can get the measurements then I can plot it on our chart and take a picture to show his progress,
His head looks so round already also - we tried to get a picture yesterday but he just would not sit still long enough in one position. We will try again tonight, then we can show it against the picture we took at 17 weeks and you too will be able to see!!
Im so excited for him, I know he doesnt have a clue whats goin on, but he has excepted it so well, its like he doesnt have it on which makes me feel that we have with no doubt made the right choice for him!
Next appointment is in September - I cant wait!
